Visitor & Tourist Visas

These visas allow you and your family to visit Australia for a holiday.

Visitor visas are crucial for individuals from around the globe who wish to visit Australia for tourism, business, family visits, or attending short-term educational courses or conferences. These visas facilitate international travel and cultural exchanges, allowing travelers to explore Australia's unique landscapes and vibrant cities, engage in business activities, and enjoy family reunions. Here, we explore the different types of visitor visas available, their eligibility requirements, the application process, andthe conditions that may apply after the visas are granted.

Types of Visitor Visas

  1. Visitor Visa (Subclass 600):
    • For tourists, business visitors, and those visiting family.
    • Available for single or multiple entries.
    • Allows stays of up to three, six, or 12 months.
  2. Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, Subclass 601):
    • Multiple entries within a 12-month period, with each stay up to 3 months.
    • Ideal for family visits, holidays, and certain business activities.
    • Requires application from outside Australia using the Australian ETA app with a passport from eligible countries.
  3. eVisitor Visa (Subclass 651):
    • Permits multiple visits within 12 months, each up to 3 months.
    • Suitable for holidaying, visiting friends or family, business activities, and short-term studies.
    • Must be applied for from outside Australia with a passport from eligible countries.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Genuine Temporary Entrant: Applicants must prove their intention to stay temporarily and leave after their visit.
  • Health and Character Requirements: Applicants may need to undergo health examinations and provide police clearances.
  • Sufficient Funds: Visitors should have enough funds to support themselves during their stay or have a financial guarantor.

Application Process

  • Online Application: Most applications are submitted online via the Department of Home Affairs website.
  • Documentation: Necessary documents include a valid passport, proof of funds, and a letter of invitation if applicable.
  • Biometrics and Health Checks: Some applicants must provide biometric data and undergo health checks based on their nationality and other factors.
  • Visa Grant: Successful applicants receive a visa grant notification electronically. It’s essential to review the visa conditions and validity.

Country Requirements

  • Countries Requiring Visitor Visas: Most nations need to obtain a visa to enter Australia, including countries from Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe.
  • Certain Countries: Passport holders of some countries are eligible for the ETA (subclass 601) or eVisitor visa (subclass 651), which offer a streamlined application process.

Visitor Visa Extensions

  • Visitors may apply to extend their stay beyond the initial visa expiry, subject to eligibility and visa type. It is crucial to apply for an extension before the current visa expires to prevent overstaying and possible visa cancellation.
  • Some visitor visas have conditions that prevent further visa applications from being lodged while the visa holder is in Australia.

Visitor Visa Conditions

  • Visitors must adhere to specific conditions that appear on their visa grant, including:
    • No working or studying, except for approved business activities.
    • Maintaining adequate health insurance.
    • Departing Australia before the visa expires.
    • Avoiding criminal activities during their stay.
